TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team released its 2020 schedule on Tuesday. The schedule features 24 matches with 12 of those being home matches at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
“The schedule is always strong, we play in the best conference in the country in the ACC,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “This year we have a match with Florida down at Lake Nona which is the largest crowd each year in the country. We tend to be on T.V. more than any other school in the country, 15 T.V. matches in the last three years so we are excited for a bunch of our matches to be broadcasted again this year. We have started a home and away with Mississippi State this year who has been the SEC champions the last two years. We also have a match with Oklahoma who is considered one of the best, if not the best, team in the BIG 12. Great schedule, great conference and a lot of home matches which gives us opportunity for our fans to come out and watch us play.”
Florida State enters the season coming off a 19-11 overall record last spring. The Seminoles made their 17th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and finished off their season in the second round of the tournament.
Out of conference, the Noles take on a challenging schedule against the best teams in the country. The team will travel to Austin, Texas for the ITA Kick-off Weekend (Jan. 24-27). FSU will take on defending national champions, Texas, along with Vanderbilt and Indiana with a chance of advancing to the National Indoor Championship in February. The Seminoles will begin the season in the Bahamas against Penn State on January 5, 2020. Florida State will come back home to host five consecutive matches against Florida Atlantic (January 10), Louisiana (January 11), Florida A&M (January 11), South Alabama (January 17) and the 2019 SEC champions, Mississippi State (January 19).
For the fourth straight year, the Garnet and Gold head to Lake Nona, Fla. to compete against Florida at the USTA National Campus. For the past several years the matches between these two in-state rivals have been the highest attended regular season college tennis match of the season, with matches broadcasted live on the Tennis Channel. After that, Florida State stays on the road to take on another SEC foe in Auburn, on February 7.
FSU hosts a Round Robin Invite on Feb. 22-23 as they welcome Tennessee Tech, and Buffalo into town. In the final non-conference match of the season, the team will travel to Lake Nona, Fla. once again to take on a talented Oklahoma team on February 28.
The 12-match ACC schedule begins at home with a match against Georgia Tech (March 1). The five other home matches will be against Duke (March 13), North Carolina (March 15), Wake Forest (March 27), Louisville (April 3), and NC State (April 5).
Florida State finishes the 2020 season on the road at Virginia (April 9) and Virginia Tech (April 11). The four other road games will be against Clemson (March 5), Miami (March 8), Boston College (March 19), and Notre Dame (March 22).
The ACC Tournament begins April 15 and runs through April 19 and will be hosted in Rome, Ga.
The NCAA Tournament begins with Regionals (May 1-3) and Super Regionals (May 8-9) before the final eight teams meet in Stillwater, Oklahoma at the NCAA Final (May 14-23).
“After a tough schedule in the fall, we are really excited about the spring schedule,” said assistant coach Chris Doerr. “Being in the toughest conference in the country is something that excites both the coaching staff and the players. We are also very lucky to be on T.V a lot as well as some tasty home matches for our fans to really get behind our guys.”
