CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After being forced to head from Cary to Chapel Hill due to weather, the Seminoles fell to second-seeded Virginia 4-0 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
“I felt like we really had a good opportunity,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Late in the first set, we were up a break on four courts. I thought Virginia really took it to us after that and we never got the momentum back. We got good efforts and the energy was really good early on. They just controlled the match after that.”
For the second time in two matches of the ACC Tournament, the Noles lost the doubles point. Court three fell first as Virginia won 6-1. Courts one and two were in battles. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain and freshman Bryn Nahrung were in a back and forth match on court two. They were down 6-5 before Virginia clinched the doubles point on court one 6-3.
The Noles got off to a promising start to begin singles with early leads in the first set on courts one, four, five and six. Virginia flipped the momentum and ended up taking five of six first sets.
Freshman Richard Thongoana was the lone Seminole to earn a first set win as he won 6-4 over Matthew Lord. Virginia took a 2-0 lead after taking court three 6-3, 6-2. They expanded their lead to 3-0 with a win on court one 7-5, 6-0. Virginia clinched the match 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 on court two.
Florida State will now wait until Monday, April 29th for the selection show to find out where they will head for the NCAA Tournament
