TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 17 Florida State women’s tennis team earned its first-ever victory in the Indoor Tennis Facility today, while matched up against UCF, 6-1. The Seminoles are now 1-0 on the season and 7-0 all-time against the Knights.
With this win under Head Coach Jennifer Hyde, the Seminoles moved to 6-2 in season openers.
“I was really impressed with the effort today from the ladies,” Hyde said. “They did a really good job of keeping their heads down and taking care of business.”
In doubles, junior Amy Sargaent began her comeback after sitting out the fall season, paired up with junior Carolina De los Santos in the number two spot. They went on to defeat senior Jenna Doerfler and sophomore Courtney Griffith 8-2.
Junior Francesca Segarelli and sophomore Ruth Seaborne teamed up for the number one spot and defeated their opponents, junior Genevieve Lorbergs and senior Alexis Rodriguez 8-1 and securing the doubles point for the Noles.
“It was nice to see Ruth and Carolina playing after missing most of the fall as well as having Fran back and competing at such a high level after she missed most of the fall too.” Hyde added.
In singles the Seminoles took five out of the six points as De Los Santos defeated Griffith in the fourth spot, 6-1, 6-0. Erkan picked up a win as she defeated Dorefler as the third singles player, 6-2, 6-4. Segarelli led the Noles in the first spot, as she beat Lorbergs, 6-2, 6-3. In the second position, Seaborne took her match against Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-3.
Finishing the day, junior Casey Simmons outlasted Hodges in a battle in the six spot with scores of 7-6, 7-5.
“The thing I’m most impressed with about today is the fact that the girls played complete matches.” Hyde said. “Developing that habit earn on in the season, that’s only going to make things easier in the long run and as the competition gets better. We’ve got a lot of work to do to get ready for Indoor’s next weekend, but we started off on the right foot.”
The Seminoles will be back in action next weekend as they are set to host the first two rounds of the ITA Indoor Championships. They will play Ohio State at 2 p.m. on Jan. 28. Location is yet to be determined. Check back to Seminoles.com and Twitter (FSU_WTennis) for more information.
