A Golden Moment

July 1, 2014

Sometimes, dreams really do come true. And those moments are worth more than gold.

Former Florida State golden girl Tori Cowen fulfilled a lifelong dream as she was crowned 2014 Miss Florida on June 28 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Cowen competed in the Miss Florida Pageant for the second consecutive year after being named Miss North Florida in December 2013, and will represent the state of Florida at the prestigious Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J. on September 14.

It’s an opportunity that Cowen has hoped for since childhood and one that was well worth the wait.

“I want to thank everyone for the continuous support. The kind words, prayers and congratulations mean more to me than you will ever know. I am so grateful for the opportunity to represent such an amazing state and excited for the journey to come,” Cowen said.

The Florida State spirit programs were also well represented at the Miss Florida Pageant with current golden girl and 2014 Miss Tallahassee winner Ashley Wilkinson. The two teammates had the chance to compete together one again at the week long event in St. Petersburg. Just one year after being named Miss Tallahassee in 2013, Cowen had the chance to crown Wilkinson with the same honor in 2014.

It was a moment that made every Florida State golden girl, past and present, proud to be associated with the best sprit program in college athletics.

“When Tori crowned me at Miss Tallahassee this year we not only were just former teammates we were officially sisters through an outstanding organization. Tori helped me so much throughout the Miss Florida week. I owe her a huge thank you for all that she has done for me,” Wilkinson said. “Now one of my dearest friends will be on that stage in Atlantic City competing for Miss America and I couldn’t be more excited for her.”

“What an honor for Florida State University and especially the Spirit Programs to have both Miss Tallahassee and Miss Florida.  Both these girls are amazing young ladies and exemplify exactly what it means to be a Seminole,” director of spirit groups Staci Sutton said. “I am so proud of Ashley and Tori and I cannot wait to watch Tori represent the great state of Florida at the Miss America pageant in September.”

Cowen now sets her sights on Atlantic City and will be preparing for the prestigious event from now until September. She is currently majoring in marketing at Florida State. She was a member of the golden girls from 2011-2013.

Seminoles.com will have more to come on Cowen’s journey to Miss America in the coming months.
