ACC Softball Honors – March 28

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – As the Seminoles extended their unbeaten streak to 23 games last week with wins at UCF and Virginia, FSU softball swept the ACC weekly honors for the second week in a row as sophomore Carsyn Gordon and redshirt senior Jessica Burroughs were named ACC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday.

It is the first career ACC weekly award for Gordon, while Burroughs is receiving ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for the fourth time this season and the eighth time in her career.

Overall, the 2017 Seminole softball team has six members who have combined for 18 total ACC Player or Pitcher of the week awards throughout their careers. In addition to Burroughs’ eight accolades, Jessica Warren and Alex Powers have three apiece, while Meghan King has two and Sydney Broderick and Gordon each have one.

Gordon produced offensively and defensively last week as Florida State earned four road wins with a sweep at Virginia and a non-conference victory at UCF. The sophomore batted .636 (7-for-11) with a double, two home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored with two walks and zero strikeouts. She had at least one hit and one RBI in each game of the week, was on base nearly 70% of the time (.692) and posted a slugging percentage of 1.273.

She was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate at UCF and helped the Noles take the lead in the second inning with an RBI single to right. She opened the Virginia series with RBIs in each of her first three at bats as FSU posted a 13-1 victory on March 24. Overall, she hit two home runs and drove in seven RBI in Charlottesville, Va., as the Seminoles remained undefeated in conference play this year. Splitting time at both right field and first base, she was perfect in 11 defensive chances on the week and has not committed an error this season.

Burroughs continued her impressive season with a perfect week in the circle, posting a 2-0 record and a 0.58 ERA in three appearances, including a six-inning no-hitter at Virginia on March 26. It marked the fourth no-hitter of her career and the first of 2017.

The redshirt senior racked up the strikeouts, totaling 21 Ks in 12.0 innings, allowing just nine hits, one run and one walk for the week. Burroughs struck out the side in the first inning in both starts at Virginia on March 24 and 26, increasing her total to eight times this season (in 17 starts) that she has recorded three strikeouts in the first inning of the game. She pitched the first two innings of the game at UCF, striking out three and giving up two hits.

Burroughs did not allow a walk and recorded seven strikeouts in four innings at Virginia on March 24 and in her no-hitter on March 26, the only blemishes on her record were a hit-by-pitch and a walk, as she struck out 11 in the 6.0-inning victory. She improved to 16-1 on the year and holds a 0.70 ERA with 155 strikeouts in 99.2 innings.
