TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Running back Cam Akers has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List, it was announced Wednesday.
Akers is on his second national award watch list after earlier this week being named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award given to college football’s player of the year. He broke FSU’s freshman rushing record in 2017 and enters the 2019 season already ranking 18th in program history with 1,730 career rushing yards. The junior from Clinton, Mississippi, recorded a team-best 866 all-purpose yards last season with 706 rushing yards, 145 receiving yards and 15 kickoff return yards and was recognized with the team’s Bobby Bowden Leadership Award. He scored eight total touchdowns, including a career-high-tying two scores against Wake Forest and again at No. 3 Notre Dame. He tied for fourth in the ACC and 14th nationally with three 50-yard runs, including a career-long 85-yard carry that was the seventh-longest rush in program history.
The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation’s premier running back. It was created in 1989 and is the only major college football award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate. The PwC SMU Athletic Forum will release its list of three finalists on Nov. 20, and the 2019 Doak Walker Award winner will be announced Dec. 12 during the Home Depot College Football Awards live on ESPN.
Florida State opens its 2019 season against Boise State in Jacksonville on Aug. 31. Tickets for the 7 p.m. kickoff can be purchased here. Ticket options for the six games inside Doak Campbell Stadium, including a Nov. 2 matchup with rival Miami, are available here.
