Alaniz Leads Noles at US Open

Tallahassee, Fla. –  Florida State senior swimmer Griffin Alaniz had a breakout weekend at the 2019 Toyota US Open in Atlanta, finishing in fifth place in the 100m back with a time of 54.76.

Alaniz advanced to the championship heat after swimming a time of 55.20 in prelims for seventh place. He also secured two 2020 US Olympic Trial cuts, both in the 100m back and 200m back at 2:01.65, where he placed 11th in prelims.

All told, the Seminoles had 10 swims at finals on Thursday and Friday of the four-day meet that ran from Dec. 4-7 at the McAuley Aquatic Center.

“We had a great meet,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “We got some Olympic Trial cuts and made some finals, which at this level is awesome. We got some great long course experience, which will pay off next year.”

Will Pisani competed in a pair of B finals, first winning the 50m free at 22.44 on Thursday before placing 14th overall in the 100m fly at 53.20. Pisani clocked a mark of 50.07 in prelims of the 100m free for 17th place.

Junior Emma Terebo also swam her personal best in prelims the 100m back, touching with a time of 1:01.22, which in a FINA B standard. Swimming in the B final, Terebo touched at 1:02.95 for 16th place.

Sophomore Nina Kucheran won the C final of the 100m breast, touching with a time of 1:09.21 After posting a 1:10.15 in prelims. The Sudbury, Ontario native also finished in 20th place out of prelims in the 200m breast at 2:32.84.

Former standout Tayla Lovemore finished third in the C final with a time of 59.76 in the 100m fly. The Durban, South Africa native was also the first alternate for finals in the 50m free with a time of 25.91.

Sophomore Izaak Bastian competed in two D finals, finishing tied for third in the 50m free at 23.49 before winning the 100m breast at 1:03.51 after posting a 1:02.76 in prelims.

Freshman Sydney VanOvermeiren also competed in a D final, placing 31st overall in the 400m IM with a time of 5:00. After swimming a 4:55.52 in prelims. Her classmate Nick Vance also performed in the D final of the men’s race, finishing in 32nd with a time of 4:39.38 after posting a 4:32.46 in the morning heats.

Pisani and Kucheran met each of their three Canadian Olympic Trials standards, while sophomore Maddie McDonald secured her in the 100 and 200 back.
