All-America Westrup Leads Seminoles At Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic

March 25, 2007

Florida State sophomore All-America Caroline Westrup shot an even par 71 in the final round but was unable to repeat as tournament champion as she finished tied for third in the individual standings in leading the No. 25 ranked Seminoles to a 10th place team finish at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Westrup completed the event one stroke behind Maria Hernandez of Purdue and Leah Wigger of Virginia who finished tied for medalist honors with scores of 215 – one stroke ahead of Westrup’s 216 total for the 54-hole event.

Westrup, the nation’s No. 2 ranked individual player, made a strong run at individual medalist honors during the final round. She played her final 12 holes of the tournament at three under par but fell one stroke shy of catching Hernandez and Wigger. Wigger defeated Hernandez on the first playoff hole by one stroke to claim medalist honors. Auburn led the team race wire-to-wire to win the championship. The Tigers won the championship by 11 strokes.

She closed the round with four birdies, seven holes at par and only one bogie to finish with a tournament best 71. Hernandez the played the final round at one under while Wigger was even par over the final 18 holes to hold off the charging Westrup. She improved he score during both of the final two rounds with scores of 77 and 72 after opening the event with a 79. Brummett finished tied for 33rd in the individual standings.
