TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Alongside FSU Homecoming, Florida State softball will be hosting several events throughout the weekend of October 25-27 to honor its past, compete in the present, and also build toward its future. There will be games on Friday and Sunday, and former players will be in town all weekend long for several celebrations and events.
Numerous alumni are returning to honor the life of Dana Bailey Coya, who played for Florida State from 1995-99 and lost her battle with skin cancer in 2014. Last year, a group of her former teammates launched an effort to raise funds for a memorial locker in her honor, and the presentation of that donation will occur at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday before the game.
Prior to any of the on-field festivities, head coach Lonni Alameda will begin the weekend as the Grand Marshal of the Florida State Homecoming Parade. The parade will travel west down College Avenue toward the Westcott Building, beginning on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
“Every year it is important to talk about your history and tradition, and how it is an honor to wear the jersey and represent Florida State,” said Alameda. “This weekend will be special with alumni weekend as we get to honor Dana, and her family and a lot of alumni that supported her will be able to share her story.
“The opportunity to be the Grand Marshal and be part of Homecoming is very special. There are not many times that you get to step outside of what you do day-to-day. We are 24-7 here at the softball office, trying to give to these young ladies and grow the program. Now, we get a chance to be with people that love Florida State, love the school, love what it means to be a Seminole, and even the city of Tallahassee as a whole. I’m really excited to be able to soak all of that in, and it will be really special.”
It is the only home weekend of competition this fall, as the Seminoles will play games on Friday at 4:00 p.m. against Thomas University and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. versus Rollins College. There will also be Garnet and Gold Scrimmages two hours prior to each game this weekend.
The most important thing for fans to know this weekend is that, due to construction of a new shade structure, none of the regular seats will be available and only the berm on the third base line will be open inside the facility. Fans can obviously watch from the hill beyond left field and in the parking garage, but the rest is closed due to construction. The bathrooms will remain accessible for all fans.
