TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three freshmen on the Florida State beach volleyball team were named AVCA High School All-Americans. Madelyne May Anderson earned first team honors, while teammates Liz Waters-Leiga and Kera Rutz earned second-team honors.
Florida State led the country with three members on the list as only three other schools had multiple players receive the honor.
“I am very proud of the three of them for getting AVCA All-American honors,” said head coach Brooke Niles. “It is a testament to how hard they have worked especially since committing to Florida State. It is also a testament to our incoming class being that we have more on the list than any other school.”
Anderson earned nine first-place finishes, including the p1440 Nationals and AVP First Nationals in July. She Completed 14 of the last 15 tournaments in either first or second and earned third-place in AAU Nationals and second in USAV Nationals and BVCA Nationals (159 pairs).
Waters-Leiga has had four top-3 finishes since July 2018 including a first-place finish in the 85-pair AAU Junior Olympic Games.
“Liz has been one of the top NorCal players for the past few years, but is underrated nationally,” said Derek Olson Liz’s club coach. “She’s really competitive and always plays up in big matches. She’s got a really deceptive offensive game and see’s the court well on offense. It’s been an honor to work with her and I look for her to do big things on an already loaded Florida State team.”
Rutz competed in six tournaments this past year and placed in the top-5 in all six of them, including a win in the AVP America in Dallas.
“Keara is a competitor and someone who wasn’t afraid to put in the extra time,” said Matt Olson, her club coach. “She pushed herself to improve and was determined to be the best athlete she could be entering into college. Keara was a pleasure to coach and a valuable member of our club.”
