NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Athlon Sports, publisher of the No. 1-selling college football magazine, continues the release of its preseason Top 25 poll at www.athlonsports.com. The countdown begins every year at the beginning of May and leads to the on-sale date of Athlon’s category-leading college football preseason annuals.
Jimbo Fisher’s Florida State Seminoles continue the countdown at No. 4 with two preseason All-Americans and 12 players selected as All-ACC performers. Athlon Sports predicts Florida State will finish first in the ACC’s Atlantic Division. In the five year period from 2006-10, Athlon Sports led all other preseason football magazines in prediction accuracy.*
“Florida State looks like the class of the Atlantic Division,” says Athlon Sports managing editor Mitch Light. “Jimbo Fisher has this program trending upward, and we predict the Seminoles will take the ACC crown and play in a BCS bowl.”
Two Florida State standouts were named preseason All-Americans. Defensive end Brandon Jenkins made the first team, while punt returner Greg Reid was tabbed a third-teamer. In addition, the Florida State defensive line unit was ranked No. 2 nationally. The defensive backs unit was rated No. 3, and the wide receivers unit was ranked No. 10 in the country. All three groups were deemed best in the ACC.
Twelve Seminoles earned preseason All-ACC honors, including Jenkins, offensive lineman Andrew Datko and punter Shawn Powell on the first team. Quarterback EJ Manuel, offensive lineman Zebrie Sanders, defensive backs Greg Reid and Xavier Rhodes, linebacker Nigel Bradham and kicker Dustin Hopkins were named to the second team, while running back Chris Thompson, wide receiver Willie Haulstead and defensive lineman Everett Dawkins garnered third-team honors.
