TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two days after their last match, the No. 18 Florida State women’s tennis team (2-1) is set for another contest on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. against the University of North Florida at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
“I know we are excited to get back onto court and compete against North Florida on Wednesday,” Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. “There is still a little bit of sting from Sunday’s loss and sometimes the best way to get past a loss like that is to get out and start competing again.
The timing of this match is perfect for us.” The Seminoles are coming off of a tough 4-3 loss against No.37 Ole Miss, of which they suffered at home on Sunday during the ITA Kickoff Weekend, however they did pick up a win against No.56 Ohio State, 5-2 on Saturday.
During the weekend, Junior Carolina De los Santos picked up two singles wins on the fifth court, as she beat OSU’s Kelsey Dieters, 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday and Ole Miss’ Julia Jones, 6-2,6-2 on Sunday. In her three singles matches this season, De Los Santos has lost a combined eight games in her 3-0 start.
Also picking up two singles wins was freshman Leyla Erkan. On Saturday, Erkan defeated Gabby Steele from Ohio State 6-2,6-3 in the fourth position. Moving up a spot on Sunday, Erkan would outlast Ole Miss’ Abby Guthrie, 6-4,4-6,6-2 from the third spot. The Hilton Head, S.C. native is also 3-0 for the start of the season in singles.
Moving to 3-0 in doubles, junior Francesca Segarelli and sophomore Ruth Seaborne picked up two wins from the number two court as the overcame a battle on Saturday against Ohio State’s Kelsey Haviland and Noelle Malley, 9-7. The pair would come back on Sunday to defeat the Ole Miss duo of Gabby Rangel and Erin Stephens, 8-5.
Wednesday’s match will mark the first dual competition this season for North Florida as well as the first for their new head coach, Audra Cohen. The Seminoles hold a 6-1 advantage over the Osprey’s in the all-time series. The last time the two teams met in a dual was in the first round of the 2010 NCAA tournament, where the Noles captured a 4-0 victory en route to their first ever Sweet 16 appearance.
In addition, UNF’s Aline Berkenbrock faced Erkan this fall at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fla., with Berkenbrock taking the match, 6-3,6-1.
“We are excited to take advantage of this home stand we have here,” Hyde stated. “It’s always good to play other Florida schools and keep our streak against them alive. It’s a good challenge and great opportunity for us.”
The match is schedule to be played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center, however due to the weather forecast, it is possible that the match could be moved to the Indoor Tennis Facility.
