TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Scottie Barnes, one of the most heralded recruits in the history of the Florida State basketball program, has been selected as a Preseason Third-Team All-American by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports. The Seminole newcomer is one of two ACC players and one of just three freshmen among the 15 payers picked for Rothstein’s three preseason All-American teams.
Says Rothstein on Barnes: Super skilled at 6-9, Barnes has a chance to be one of the best freshmen that’s ever played for Leonard Hamilton. Florida State will miss Trent Forrest, Devin Vassell, and Patrick Williams, but the addition of Barnes will help keep the Seminoles at the top of the ACC.
Barnes is the highest rated recruit at Florida State under Hamilton and his staff. He was the No. 6 overall ranked player and No. 1 ranked power forward in the 2020 recruiting class. Barnes was everybody’s All-Star as he was selected to play in the 2020 McDonald’s All-American game, the Jordan Brand Game and the Nike Hoop Summit following his senior season. He was named to the 2019 USA Today All-Florida Boys Basketball First Team, to the MaxPreps Sophomore First Team All-American team in 2018 and earned MaxPreps Freshman All-American Honorable Mention honors.
Barnes (West Palm Beach, Fla.) graduated from Montverde Academy in 2020. He averaged 11.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists in helping Montverde to a 25-0 record. The Eagles earned an average margin of victory of 39 points per game during his senior season.
Barnes’ signing with Florida State in November 2019 marked the fifth time in the past six recruiting classes the Seminoles have landed a player ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
Florida State, which won the ACC regular season championship for the first time in school history in 2020, begins practice later this week as it looks to win its second consecutive ACC Championship in 2021.
Florida State is the third winningest team in the ACC (104-34, .734 winning percentage) since the start of the 2016-17 season with only Duke (114 wins) and Virginia (112 wins) having more wins among the 15 teams in the ACC in the last four seasons. The Seminoles are the second winningest team in the nation for home court wins in the last four seasons (Gonzaga, 64-2 (.970); Florida State (62-3, .954) and tied for sixth nationally for home court wins in the last four seasons. The Seminoles are sixth in the nation in wins against ranked teams, 23 – and trail only Duke, 28, Kansas, 26, Virginia, 24, Michigan State, 24, and North Carolina, 24, during the last six years.
