DURHAM, N.C. – Florida State was recognized with two student-athletes on Baseball America’s preseason All-America team. Juniors Tyler Holt (OF) and Mike McGee (UT) were named to the second and third team, respectively to kick off the 2010 season.
Holt is coming off a sophomore season in which he led the team in hitting with a .401 average as he was one of just two Seminole student-athletes to start all 63 games during the 2009 season. He collected 95 hits in 237 at-bats, recording 87 runs, 54 walks, 34 stolen bases and an on-base percentage of .520, the seventh highest recorded in a single-season at Florida State. Holt finished the year leading the ACC in runs scored, stolen bases, walks and on-base percentage, while ranking in the top 10 in batting average (3rd), doubles (3rd) and hits (t-3rd).
The Gainesville, Fla., native earned second team All-America honors from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, while earning a spot on the All-ACC first team in 2009. He was also the recipient of the Gold Glove Award for his outstanding defensive effort in centerfield. Holt spent this past summer playing for Team USA where he hit .371 in 22 games.
McGee was a productive two-way player for the Seminoles in 2009. The outfielder/right handed pitcher finished the season second on the team in hitting with a .379 average, while leading the Garnet and Gold in home runs (19), RBI (78) and slugging percentage (.768). On the mound, McGee, went 6-2 with a 4.04 ERA in 15 appearances which included 13 starts. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native registered 72 strikeouts in 69.0 innings of work. He posted a career-high 12 strikeouts in the regular season finale against Grambling State and held opponents to .248 batting average on the year.
For his efforts during his sophomore season, McGee was named a second team All-ACC honoree as well as earning second team All-America honors from Baseball America and third team accolades from the NCBWA.
The 2010 baseball season begins Friday, February 19 at 4:00 p.m. with a three-game series on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium against Georgia State.
