Baseball Announces 1999 Early Signing Class

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State announced its 1999 baseball recruiting
class for the early signing period, which ran from November 10-17. The
class consists of 10 players, eight out of high school and two from
junior colleges.

“I’m very pleased with the class we have coming aboard,” said
head coach Mike Martin. “Jamey Shouppe (recruiting coordinator) has
done another excellent job during this early signing period. We really
put an emphasis on offense as we signed eight position players and two
pitchers. They are a talented group that the coaching staff is very
excited to get them on the field.”

FSU’s recruiting classes have been ranked in the top ten in
seven of the last eight years.

Listed below is a brief bio on the 10 signees:

Aaron Cheesman (C, 5-10, 185, R/R, Sarasota HS, Sarasota, FL)
* .356, 24 RBI, threw out 60% of opposing base runners
* great defensive catcher for nationally ranked Sarasota HS
* ranks in top 4% of class with 4.2 GPA

Ron Davenport (IF, 6-2, 190, L/R, Leesville Road HS, Raleigh, NC)
* .429, 7 HR, 30 RBI, 7-0 as a pitcher, 1.54 ERA & 81 K in 39 IP
* 1st team all-state, invited to 1999 USA Jr. National Trials
* projected to be selected in first 10 rounds of MLB Draft
* only out of state signee, holds state record with three hits and six RBI in one inn.

Marc LaMacchia (RHP, 6-1, 180, East Lake HS, Palm Harbor, FL)
* 4-4 record, 3.59 ERA, 70K in 54 IP
* participated in 1999 Team One Florida Showcase
* throws in upper 80’s to low 90’s, hard curve/slider in low 80’s

Tony McQuade (OF/3B, 6-1, 190, B/R, Buchholz HS, Gainesville, FL)
* .407, 10 HR, 35 RBI, .513 OB%, .868 slugging %
* regarded as one the state’s top hitters, played in Team One National Showcase
* projected to be selected in the first 10 rounds of MLB Draft

Trent Peterson (LHP, 6-0, 175, Florida High, Tallahassee, FL)
* 9-3 record, 1.64 ERA, 109 K in 72 IP
* throws in upper 80’s with very good breaking ball
* 3A 1st team all-state, will be drafted in MLB Draft

Jeff Probst (2B/SS, 5-10, 170, B/R, Clearwater Central Catholic HS, Largo, FL)
* .386, 2 HR, 10 doubles, 10 SB
* attended Team One East Coast Reginal Showcase
* switch hitter with good speed

Tony Richie (C, 6-2, 200, R/R, Bishop Kenny HS, Jacksonville, FL)
* .580, 10 HR, 56 RBI, 24 doubles
* one of the top catchers in the country, 1999 TPX All-American
* Team One National Showcase participant, 1st team all-state
* Tourn. MVP for Gold Medal winning Team USA at 1998 IBA World Champ.
* only junior named a 1999 All-American by Baseball America
* expected to be taken in first five rounds of MLB Draft

Richie Smith (OF, 5-10, 185, L/R, Chipola JC, Marianna, FL)
* .314, 8 HR, 37 RBI, 6 doubles, 17 SB
* versatile athlete who was 12-1 as starting QB at Liberty Co. HS
* 1998 2A all-state selection at Liberty Co., 12 HR Scott Toole (2B/SS, 6-1, 185, R/R, Tallahassee CC, Tallahassee, FL)
* .303, 1 HR, 8 doubles, 20 SB
* 1998 1st team all-state at The Bolles School (Jacksonville)
* solid defensively, played 2B last season (nine errors) and will play SS this year

Bryan Zech (Utility, 5-10, 170, B/R, Wellington HS, Wellington, FL)
* .492, 3 HR, 9 doubles, 15-for-15 SB
* switch hitter with speed who is brother of former FSU standout
