TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) — Florida State, which defeated Charleston Southern by an 88-67 margin Saturday in its season opener, plays host to Iona on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. The Seminoles’ game against the Gaels marks only the second meeting between the two teams with the only other game between the two teams coming in the first round of the 2009 Old Spice Classic at the Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Seminoles play Iona in the second of a season-opening four-game home stand which saw them gain at victory over Charleston Southern and sees them playing host to Winthrop and Detroit before playing its first game away from Tallahassee against Temple in Brooklyn in the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Barclay’s Center. Following Tuesday’s game against Iona, the Seminoles begin play in the 2016 NIT Season Tip Off tournament as it plays host to Winthrop on Friday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Seminoles will also play host to Detroit in its second game of the NIT Season Tip-Off before travelling to play Temple in the third round of the event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Nov. 24. The championship game of the tournament is on Nov. 25 at 3:30 at Barclays Center.
FLORIDA STATE VS. IONA – A SERIES HISTORY
Florida State will play host to Iona on November 15, 2016 at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee. The game marks the second all-time meeting between the Seminoles and the Gaels with Florida State holding a 1-0 series lead. The Seminoles defeated the Gaels, 54-49, in the first round of the of the Old Spice Classic at the Milk House in Lake Buena Vista Florida (Disney’s Wide World of Sports) on November 26, 2009. Iona is coached by Tim Cluess who is in his sixth season at Iona but has never faced Florida State during his career. Iona won the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 79-76 win over Monmouth in the conference tournament championship game. The Gaels are one of two conference champions (also North Carolina) who received automatic bids into the 2016 NCAA Tournament who the Seminoles will face during the 2016-17 season. Iona is a member of the MAAC – the Seminoles will face their second MAAC opponent of the season when they take on Manhattan in the Orange Bowl Classic on December 17 in Sunrise, Fla.
BACON NAMED TO NAISMITH AWARD WATCH LIST
Florida State sophomore Dwayne Bacon, who will lead the Florida State men’s basketball team against Iona on Tuesday night, has been named one of 50 nominees for the 2017 Naismith Award presented by the Atlanta Tip-Off Club. It marks the first time in his career that he has been named to the Naismith Award Watch List and is his second major award nomination of the preseason after being named to the Julius Erving Award Watch List, awarded to the nation’s top small forward. Bacon earned Freshman All-American honors as he was named to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-American team by collegeinsiders.com and to the All-ACC Freshman Team by both the 15 ACC coaches and the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association in 2016.
ISAAC NAMED TO KARL MALONE AWARD WATCH LIST
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has named Florida State freshman Jonathan Isaac as one of 20 candidates for the 2017 Karl Malone Power Forward Award. Players are selected from Division I men’s basketball teams all over the country for this watch-list and Isaac is one of six from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The award was introduced in 2015 by Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone in an effort to recognize the top power forwards in the country. Malone achieved great success during his 19 seasons in the NBA as a 14-time NBA All-Star (1988-98, 2000-02), 11-time All-NBA First Team player (1989-99) and a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. He also won two Olympic gold medals (1992, 1996).
SEMINOLE GREAT DURHAM TO GO INTO COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME
Hugh Durham, who coached Florida State’s men’s basketball team to the 1972 NCAA Championship game, will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Nov. 18, 2016 at the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, Mo. Durham will be inducted in the 2016 class along with DePaul’s Mark Aguirre, Kansas State’s Bob Boozer, Illinois State’s Doug Collins, La Salle’s Lionel Simmons, UCLA’s Jamal Wilkes, Georgia’s Dominique Wilkins, and former Stanford and Cal Berkley head coach Mike Montgomery.
