Basketball Ranked No. 4 In Final AP Poll

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ( – ACC Coach of the Year Leonard Hamilton and Florida State are ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press men’s basketball poll for the 2019-20 season – the highest final ranking in school history and the second consecutive season the Seminoles have finished in the top-10 of the AP Poll. The Seminoles were ranked No. 10 in the final poll of the 2018-10 season marking the first time in school history they have finished in the top-10 of the final poll in consecutive seasons.

Florida State is the only ACC team to finish ranked in the top-10 of the final Associated Press poll in both of the last two seasons. The Seminoles are joined by only Gonzaga, Kentucky and Michigan State as the four teams in the top-10 of the final AP poll in the last two seasons.

Florida State finished as the highest ranked of the four ACC teams in the final poll – ahead of No. 11 Duke, No. 14 Louisville and No. 16 Virginia. The Seminoles had a 3-2 record against those three teams with two victories over nationally ranked Cardinal teams and one against the Cavaliers. Florida State finished with 26 victories – the highest regular season total for victories in school history, tied for the second most among Power 5 School (Kansas, 28; Florida State 26; Baylor, 26), and tied for the eighth most amongst all Division I schools.   The Seminoles’ 26-5 overall record and .867 winning percentage is the ninth highest in the nation this season.

The Seminoles’ No. 4 ranking during the final week of the regular season and in the final ranking was their highest of the season. The No. 4 ranking was the highest for the program since the consecutive weeks of December 5 and December 12, 1972 when they were ranked No. 2 nationally. Florida State spent a school-record nine consecutive weeks this season ranked inside the nation’s top-10. The Seminoles’ entered the top 10 (at No. 9) for week 11 of the NCAA basketball season – and stayed in the top 10 for the remainder of the season.

This season marks the seventh straight season in which the ACC has had at least four teams in the top 25 of the final AP poll.

Under Hamilton, Florida State has been ranked in the nation’s top 10 in three of the last four seasons. The Seminoles were ranked as high as No. 6 during the 2016-17 season, as high as ninth during the 2018-19 season and as high a No. 4 during the 2019-20 season.

Florida State finished the 2019-20 season with a 26-5 overall record and a 16-4 mark in ACC play. The Seminoles are 55-13 overall (.809 winning percentage) and 29-9 in ACC play (.763 winning percentage) in the last two seasons. The Seminoles are one of only three teams in the ACC to win at least 54 games and at least 29 ACC games in the last two seasons.
