Basketball Ranked Preseason No. 20 By AP

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State is ranked No. 20 nationally in the preseason Associated Press College Basketball poll – the third time in the last four seasons the Seminoles have been ranked in the nation’s preseason top 25.  The Seminoles are one of four teams from the ACC in the top 25, which is topped by No 1 Gonzaga.  Florida State is ranked along with No. 9 Duke, No. 19 North Carolina and No. 25 Virginia from the ACC.

Florida State finished the 2020-21 season with an 18-7 overall record and an 11-4 mark in ACC play.  The Seminoles finished in second place in the ACC regular season standings and played Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament Championship game last season.

Florida State opened the 2018-19 season ranked No. 17 (and finished the season at No. 10), began the 2019-20 season just outside the top 25 (and finished the year at No. 4) and began the 2020-21 season ranked No. 21 (and finished the season ranked No. 14).  Florida State has been ranked in the final national poll in each of the last five seasons (2021, No. 10; 2020, No. 4; 2019, No. 10; 2018, No. 18; 2017, No. 16).  The Seminoles are one of only two teams in the ACC to be ranked in the final poll by either the AP or USA Today in each of the last five seasons.

The Seminoles are ranked in among the nation’s top 25 despite losing an ACC-high three players to the 2021 NBA Draft – Scottie Barnes (No. 4, Toronto Raptors), Balsa Koprivica (No. 56, Detroit Pistons) and RaiQuan Gray (No. 58, Brooklyn Nets).

Florida State is 73-20 overall (.785 winning percentage) and 40-13 in ACC regular season play (.754 winning percentage) since the start of the 2018-19 season.

Florida State has appeared in both of the last two ACC Championship games (2019 against Duke and 2021 against Georgia Tech) and won the 2020 ACC Championship.  The Seminoles finished in fourth place in the ACC standings in 2019, first in 2020 and second in 2021.

Florida State is scheduled to face eight teams who are ranked (or who received votes) in the preseason AP Poll: No. 7 Purdue (Nov. 30, Big Ten/ACC Challenge), No. 9 Duke (Jan. 17, Feb. 19), No. 19 North Carolina (Feb. 12), No. 25 Virginia (Feb. 26), RV Virginia Tech (Jan. 29), RV Syracuse (Dec. 4, Jan. 15), RV Louisville (Jan. 8) and RV Notre Dame (March 2).
