TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The third-ranked Florida State beach volleyball team (4-0) finished the opening weekend of the season unbeaten, with two top-10 wins. FSU earned 5-0 wins over both No. 6 Cal Poly and Tampa on Sunday.
Florida State began the day with its second top-10 win of the season, this one against No. 6 Cal Poly. Florida State’s fourth and fifth pairs gave the Noles an early 2-0 lead with a pair of straight-set wins.
Kate Privett and Avery Poppinga earned their third win of the season on court five with a 21-14, 21-14 victory. Payton Caffrey and Liz Waters-Leiga gave the Noles a 2-0 lead with a 21-18, 21-11 win on court four for their second win of the weekend.
Maddie Anderson and Sara Putt clinched the match for the Garnet and Gold on court three with a quick 21-12, 21-9 win. Torrey Van Winden and Keara Rutz took care of business on court two bring the Seminole lead to 4-0. The FSU duo won with a pair of 21-19 set victories. They trailed 13-8 in the second set before tying it up at 18 and winning the set 21-19.
Once again all eyes turned to court one as Molly McBain and Alaina Chacon headed to a third set. They won the first set 24-22 before falling in the second set 22-20. They trailed most of the third set before tying it up at 10. They would fall behind again, 13-12 but would continue to battle their way to an 18-16 third set win.
The Seminoles finished off the weekend with their third 5-0 sweep of the weekend, this time over Tampa.
Payton Caffrey teamed up with Jenna Johnson for the first time this season and the pair gave the Seminoles their first win of the match on court four. The pairing won 21-13, 21-15. Kate Privett and Avery Poppinga extended the Florida State lead to 2-0 with their fourth win of the weekend on court five 21-12, 21-10.
Torrey Van Winden and Keara Rutz clinched the match on court two 21-12, 21-7 capping off their perfect weekend. Molly McBain and Alaina Chacon made it 4-0 with a 21-16, 21-14 win on court one and Sara Putt and Maddie Anderson finished things off with a 21-14, 21-11 win on court three.
The Seminoles head on the road next weekend to play six matches in three day (March 5-7). FSU plays LMU, Tulane, Houston Baptist, LSU, Georgia State and FAU.
