TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 3 Florida State beach volleyball team (19-5, 10-1 CCSA) went 2-0 on day one of the FSU Beach Bash with 4-1 wins against No. 16 FAU and No. 8 FIU.
“Those were two more really great wins,” said head coach Brooke Niles. “It was tough to win back to back matches in the rain against highly ranked teams. They played us really tough and served really tough; it was good for us. We are going to see all these teams at the conference championship in a few weeks so it is nice to have such a decisive win over those two teams. We are now looking forward to tomorrow.”
The Noles started the day against FAU. They jumped out to early leads on all of the courts in the first wave of matches before taking the first sets from both pairs four and five. Senior Macy Jerger and freshman Kate Privett were the first pair to finish as they took the first set 21-18. In the second set, they jumped out to a 14-7 lead before clinching the set and the match 21-15 to give FSU a 1-0 lead. Senior Brooke Kuhlman and sophomore Avery Poppinga added to the Seminole lead with a win on court four. They improved to 2-0 together with their three-set win. They won the first set 21-12 but dropped the second. In the third set, they jumped out to a 5-1 before dominating the third set 15-8.
In the second wave of matches, all three courts jumped out to an early first set lead as well. Graduate Payton Rund and redshirt junior Sara Putt clinched the match with a straight-set win on court two. After taking the first set 21-16 they jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the second set before taking the match 21-15.
Juniors Molly McBain and Payton Caffrey extended the Florida State lead to 4-0 with a 21-18, 21-18 win on court two for their sixth win together.
FAU earned their only point of the match on court one with a three-set win.
The Garnet and Gold had to get right back on court as they took on FIU. After the match came down to the last court a week ago the Noles made sure that did not happen today. They jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after wins by pairs four and five in the first wave.
McBain and Caffrey were the first to finish, winning 21-15, 21-14 on court four. Jerger and Privett backed them up with a three-set win on court five. They took the first set 21-14 before losing the second set 21-16. The Seminole duo dominated the third set taking it 15-6 to give FSU a 2-0 lead.
In the second wave, Florida State took two of three first sets. Court one was the first to finish and it was FIU’s first and only point. The first set was a battle that resulted in an FIU 24-22 win. They then took the second set 21-15 to narrow the FSU lead to 2-1.
FSU bounced back to take the next two courts. Court three was first as Kuhlman and Poppinga won in a three-setter. They took the first set 21-17 before losing the second set 21-13. They took a 6-3 lead in the third set and turned that into a 15-11 win and the clinching point. Up 3-1, Florida State went on to win the final court as Putt and Rund improved 5-2 together with a three-set win. They won the first 21-16, lost the second 21-12 and finished off FIU 15-11 in the third.
Florida State finishes off the FSU Beach Bash tomorrow at 11:30 against Georgia State. Before the match we will honor our five seniors.
