BOCA RATON, Fla. – The top-ranked Florida State beach volleyball team (15-0) stayed unbeaten with wins over No. 14 Stetson (4-1) and Florida Gulf Coast (5-0).
No. 1 Florida State 4, No. 14 Stetson 1
Florida State started the day off with their ninth-ranked win of the season after a 4-1 win over No. 14 Stetson.
Kate Privett and Jenna Johnson extended their winning streak to 10 straight matches to start the season with their straight-set win on court five. The Seminole duo jumped out to an early 5-2 in the first set and never looked back as they went on to win 21-12. Privett and Johnson jumped out to a 5-2 lead once again in the second set but Stetson was able to narrow the lead to 11-10. That would not slow them down as they took the second set 21-17 and gave FSU a 1-0 lead.
Liz Waters-Leiga and Payton Caffrey expanded the Florida State lead to two with their win on court four. They fell behind 4-3 early but went on to win 10 of the next 15 points to take a 14-8 lead. They finished off Stetson in the first set with a 21-18 win. In the second set, they were down 11-10 but won 11 of the next 16 points to take the second set 21-16.
Stetson would narrow the lead to one after taking court one in straight sets 21-15, 22-20.
With Florida State leading 2-1, courts two and three would go to third sets after the Noles lost the first sets and took the second. Keara Rutz and Torrey Van Winden clinched the match on court two. They lost the first set 21-19 but took the second set 21-10 forcing a third. They would fall behind 6-4 in the third before they tied it up at 10. Rutz and Van Winden won five of the last seven points to take the third set 15-12.
Sara Putt and Maddie Anderson finished things off for Florida State as the Noles would win 4-1. Putt and Anderson lost the first set 21-19 before taking the second set 21-16. They too fell behind early 7-4 and tied the match up at 10. Putt and Anderson remained unbeaten on the season with a 15-13 third set win.
No. 1 Florida State 5, Florida Gulf Coast 0
Florida State finished off day one of the FAU Beach Bash in Paradise with a 5-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast.
Madison Fitzpatrick and Payton Caffrey got the Noles on the board with their first win as a pair this season on court four. They held a lead in the first set until FGCU tied it up at 19. Fitzpatrick and Caffrey would go on to win the first set, 24-22. In the second set, they took an early 5-2 and did not look back as they went on to take the second set 21-11.
Privett and Johnson extended the FSU lead to 2-0 with yet another win on court five. They fell behind 9-5 early in the first set but took a 14-11 lead later in the set. The FSU pair finished off set one with a 21-19 win. In the second set, they jumped out to a 5-2 lead and never gave it up on their way to a 21-15 second set win.
Rutz and Van Winden clinched their second match of the day on court two. They won the first set 21-16 and cruised to a 21-14 second set win to improve to 15-0 on the season.
Alaina Chacon and Caitlin Moon teamed up for the first time this season on court one against Florida Gulf Coast. They fell behind early before they tied the first set up at 14. Chacon and Moon won seven of the next 10 points to take the first set 21-17. They went on to take the second set 21-16 to give FSU a 4-0 lead.
Putt and Anderson went to a third set again but came away with their 15th win of the season. They won the first set 21-15 before losing the second set 21-13. In the third set, they trailed 9-6 but would go on to win nine of the next 10 points and take the set 15-10, finalizing FSU’s 5-0 win.
Florida State caps of the FAU Beach Bash in Paradise tomorrow with matches against UAB (9:00 am) and No. 12 FAU (1:00 pm).
