BOCA RATON, Fla. – The top-ranked Florida State beach volleyball team (17-0) remains unbeaten with wins over UAB (5-0) No. 12 FAU (3-2).
No. 1 Florida State 5, UAB 0
The day got started with Florida State’s 16th win of the season, this time a 5-0 win over UAB.
Jenna Johnson and Payton Caffrey teamed up together for the first time this season on court four and earned the Seminoles’ first win of the day. The pairing leaped out to a 5-2 first set lead and turned that into a 21-17 first win. In the second set, they took an early 6-4 lead and maintained it on their way to winning the set 21-14.
Avery Poppinga teamed up with Kate Privett for the first time since the opening weekend on court five and expanded the FSU lead to two. The duo went up 4-3 early and maintained their slim lead all the way to a 21-19 first set win. In the second set, FSU and UAB went back and forth until UAB took a slight 19-16 lead. Poppinga and Privett tied things up at 21 and then won three of the next four points, taking the second set 24-22.
For the third time this weekend and the seventh time this season, Torrey Van Winden and Keara Rutz clinched the match for the Noles on court two. They dominated UAB’s number two pair, winning 21-8, 21-7.
Molly McBain and Alaina Chacon expanded FSU’s lead to four with their 11th win of the season together on court one. They won 21-16, 21-17. Sara Putt and Maddie Anderson remained unbeaten on court three with a 22-20, 21-12 win to cap off FSU’s 5-0 win.
No. 1 Florida State 3, No. 12 FAU 2
Florida State capped off the FAU Beach Bash in Paradise with their 10th ranked win of the season after a 3-2 win against tournament host, No. 12 FAU.
Kate Privett and Jenna Johnson teamed back up on court five against FAU and took care of business with a 21-12, 21-13 win. They are now 12-0 on the season with all of their wins on court five.
On court four, Madison Fitzpatrick and Payton Caffrey paired up for the third time this season. They trailed early in the first set but were able to tie things up late at 21 and went on to win the first set 23-21. In the second set, they maintained a slim lead until FAU took an 18-17 advantage late in the set. Fitzpatrick and Caffrey won four of the next five points to take the second set, 21-19, giving FSU a 2-0 lead.
Sara Putt and Maddie Anderson clinched the match on court three, their sixth match-clinching win of the season. They cruised to the win after a pair of 21-11 wins in the first and second sets.
With the match clinched FAU won on court one 26-24, 21-16 over Alaina Chacon and Caitlin Moon. The Owls finished the match off with a three-set win on court two. They defeated Keara Rutz and Torrey Van Winden 14-21, 21-18, 15-12.
Florida State heads to Columbia, S.C. for the Gamecock Grand Slam. Florida State plays Georgia State, Stetson, TCU and South Carolina.
