BATON ROUGE, La. – The second-ranked Florida State beach volleyball team (10-0) improved to 10-0 on the season with two wins on Sunday against No. 19 Georgia State (5-0) and No. 11 FAU (4-1).
For the eighth time this season Florida State’s fourth and fifth pairs both earned wins, giving FSU an early 2-0 lead over No. 19 Georgia State.
Kate Privett and Jenna Johnson struck first for the Seminoles, winning 21-15, 21-11 on court five. The pair has improved to 5-0 together as they first began playing together this week.
Payton Caffrey and Liz Waters-Leiga gave FSU a 2-0 lead after the first flight of matches with a 21-18, 22-20 win on court four. The pair improved to 7-1 on the season and 20-1 together as a pair dating back to last season.
The Seminoles clinched the match on court three with a 24-22, 21-10 win by Torrey Van Winden and Keara Rutz. The FSU pair improved to 9-0 on the season with all of their matches played on court two.
Molly McBain and Alaina Chacon rebounded off of their loss last night to LSU with a 21-17, 21-16 win on court one to give FSU the 4-0 lead. Sara Putt and Maddie Anderson capped off the match against Georgia State with a three-set win on court three. After losing the first set 21-18, they rebounded to win the set 21-16 and the third set 15-6.
For the second time today, Privett and Johnson got the Seminoles on the board with their first point from court five. The two won 21-13, 21-17 to finish the weekend 6-0.
Putt and Anderson gave FSU a 2-0 lead with a 21-14, 21-17 win on court three to improve them to a perfect 10-0 on the season.
The Seminoles would win two of the final three courts on their way to defeating No. 11 FAU, 4-1. Caffrey and Waters-Leiga won their eighth match together this season on court four with a 21-19, 21-15 win. Van Winden and Rutz gave FSU its fourth and final point on court two with a 21-13, 23-21 win, keeping them unbeaten on the season.
FAU was able to take court one 21-18, 21-16, handing Chacon and McBain just their second loss in two seasons.
Florida State goes to Gulf Shores, Alabama next Saturday to compete in the March to May tournament hosted by UAB. The Seminoles play TCU, Grand Canyon and LSU.
