TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 3 Florida State beach volleyball team (20-5, 11-1 CCSA) wrapped up the FSU Beach Bash with another 4-1 win, this time over Georgia State (18-10) on Senior Day.
“It was hard for the seniors to settle in after our presentation, but it was a really good win,” said head coach Brooke Niles. “Georgia State beat FAU 5-0 and we only beat them 4-1 yesterday. We showed that we were ready for this and we had a good disciplined win. Yesterday we got the rain and today we got some heat and humidity so that was a challenge today.”
The Noles took both first sets in the first wave of competition as Senior Macy Jerger and freshman Kate Privett took the first set 23-21, while juniors Molly McBain and Payton Caffrey took the first set 21-15. McBain and Caffrey captured the first point for the Noles from the four position. After taking the first set 21-15, they quickly captured the second set 21-13.
Jerger and Privett gave FSU an insurmountable 2-0 lead with their win from the five position. After a battle in the first set, they fell behind 8-5 in the second set before taking the lead 15-11. The Seminole duo went on to win six of the final nine points to take the court.
In the second wave of pairs, Florida State only took one first set. This was not an issue as FSU went on to take two of the three matches. Sophomores Alaina Chacon and Madison Fitzpatrick were first as they grabbed a quick 21-12 first set win. That was not the case in the second set as they were in a battle. Down 12-7 they battled to tie it up and eventually take the second set 27-25 to clinch the match.
With the match already clinched Florida State took a 4-0 lead with a three-set win by graduate Payton Rund and redshirt junior Sara Putt. They two lost the first set 22-20 but bounced back to take the final two sets 21-16, 15-11.
Georgia State grabbed the final match with a three-set win on court three. Florida State took the first set but could not hold on to take the final two sets.
Florida heads to TCU next weekend for their final regular season tournament.
