TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Day one of the FSU Invitational saw two sweeps for No. 4 Florida State, one upset win and two five-court decisions. The Seminoles took down St. Petersburg College twice on Friday (March 2), defeating the Titans 5-0 and later 4-0.
The back-to-back matches against the Titans marks the first time in program history the team has seen an opponent twice in one day. With the opportunity to play the same team, the Seminoles saw a number of new players entering the lineups, with Bailey Reardon, Alaina Chacon and Lauren Anderson all winning their first matches at FSU.
“It can be hard playing the same team twice,” said head coach Brooke Niles. “I thought our team did a great job of coming in prepared and executing our game plans on our side of the net. Right now we’re really just trying to be better at a lot of things in our overall game.”
FSU’s Saturday opponents, Stetson and College of Charleston also had an eventful day, with the No. 15 Hatters taking down College of Charleston a match that ended 3-2 in a three-set decision, and the Cougars earning a ranked win against No. 11 FIU earlier in the day.
“College of Charleston had a big win against FIU, so the coaches are all going to go back and scout most of the night and prepare our team for a game plan,” Niles said. “I think we just have to be ready to compete and not take anyone lightly.”
The Seminoles return to the sand Saturday morning at 10:30 to face College of Charleston, and will see Stetson at 4:30 pm to wrap up the tournament.
