Bhullar Advances to Consolation Finals; Knaff and Arcila Advance to Doubles Semis

ATHENS, Ga. – The three remaining Seminoles are still alive in the ITA Southeast Regional. Junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar continued to advance through the consolation bracket and into the finals, as junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila advanced to the doubles semifinals.

“Rana had a really good day,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “His second match was against a top player and I liked how he came back after losing the first set. He came back and dominated the second and into the third with the tiebreaker. I thought it was a good come from behind win for Rana. The doubles play was good quality doubles by both teams. I was pleased with how we started the tiebreaker, going up 5-0 and closing it out 7-4.”

Bhullar began his day with a dominating win early in the morning. He took the first set from Blake Croyder of Georgia 6-1 and kept the pressure on his opponent. Bhullar took the second set 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Bhullar fell behind early losing the first set 7-5. He quickly flipped the script of the match and took the second set in dominating fashion, 6-1. In the next set, Bhullar took the super breaker 10-4 to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket.

“I did a good job coming back from a bad first round in the main draw,” said Bhullar. “I was not playing my best and had to figure out my game style and raise my game. I played good all around in my last match today. My opponent was playing very physical, but I was the stronger guy today.”

In doubles play, Knaff and Arcila kept up the good work and advanced to the semifinals of the main draw. They took a 6-3 lead before the Florida duo of Andy Andrade and Luka Greif tied it up at seven. In the tiebreaker, the Seminoles took an early 5-0 lead before taking it 7-4.

“We played really solid in general today,” said Knaff. “We were up 6-3 and were playing really good. There were a couple of tight games where we lost a few deuce points, which was tough. In general, we played really well together, being that it was our first tournament. It is really cool to make the semifinals and get another match tomorrow against a good team. I am hoping that we will win that one and advance to the finals and win the tournament.”

Bhullar will take on Mikhail Sokolovskiy (UCF) tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Knaff and Arcila will take on Felipe Escobar and Mateo Ruiz (FGCU) in the semifinals of the doubles main Draw.

Winning the doubles main draw results in an automatic spot in the ITA Fall Championships in November.
