Tallahassee, Fla. – No. 2 Florida State (35-6) scored two runs in the top of the eighth to defeat No. 11 Miami (28-8) by a final score of 4-2 at Mark Light Stadium Friday night. Blake Balkcom’s double down the left field line scored Jerrod Brown from first for the game-winning run. FSU starter Trent Peterson improved to 7-1 with the victory, allowing just two runs on six hits in 7.2 innings. Daniel Hodges nailed down his ninth save with a scoreless ninth.
The Seminoles took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by Eddy Martinez-Esteve. Martinez-Esteve took a 3-2 pitch over the scoreboard in left field to put FSU up early.
Miami took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second, Ryan Braun ripped a two-run double down the left line to score Alex Blanco and Danny Figueroa.
After a 47-minute rain delay, Tony McQuade belted his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to tie the game at two in the top of the sixth inning. McQuade broke an 0-for-18 slump with the homer.
FSU made it 4-2 with two runs in the eighth. Balkcom’s RBI-double to left plated Brown from first, who was hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Chris Hart then sacrificed Balkcom to third with a bunt and Bryan Zech’s sacrifice fly to right scored Balkcom.
Hodges made his 114th career appearance in the ninth and now ranks second in school history in that category.
UM threatened in the ninth, but center fielder Matt Sauls ran down a fly ball in left center with two outs and runners on second and third to end the game.
Martinez-Esteve (2-for-5), Tony Richie (2-for-5) and Sauls (2-for-4) led FSU offensively.
The Seminoles and Hurricanes meet again Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Left-hander Matt Lynch (8-2) is scheduled to start on the mound for Florida State. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Florida.
