Bloggin’ with Bully: Wrapping up the Regular Season

April 23, 2013

Hot and humid Florida dupes us into believing that it’s hot and humid everywhere. That however, was not the case at Virginia Tech this weekend. While it was on the chilly side our bats and fight were on fire. After taking a tough beating by our rival Florida we headed to Virginia Tech with redemption on our minds. I will admit it is always hard losing to the Gators especially at home but we knew we were still on top of the ACC and after the hard loss on Wednesday the weekend was on the forefront of our minds.

In the first game of our doubleheader we trailed the Hokies all game and by the 7th inning it was up in the air if we were going to make the adjustments we needed to make to win the game. Down by 1 in the top of the 7th inning with two outs Rookie first baseman Victoria East hits a 2-run home run to put us ahead. Maddie’s RBI double scored me putting us 2 runs ahead of Virginia Tech then Lacey shut them down for the second half of the inning. That game was by far one of the best-feeling games I’ve played in my softball career; when a comeback like that happens it truly makes you feel like anything can happen. Quite frankly anything can happen. Once again, another life lesson that I’m taking note of, after the game I started to think about how we could have easily given up and worried about the next game, we could have been mediocre for our last at bats but if we had then we would have never known what we were capable of. Giving up is not an option ever because if you do you will always be left wondering what if.

We continued to ride that high for the remainder of the weekend ultimately sweeping the Hokies. Sunday after we won our game we certainly locked down regular season ACC Champions. It’s crazy to think about the beginning of the season with position changes and uncertainty about who would step up. I look around and see that we have all stepped up when it comes to the game, responsibility, and faith in each other. This is a great team who celebrates the little things, a team who loves one another and gives their all to the game. I think those three things are some of the reasons why we are finding great success.

Last night Florida State Athletics had the annual Golden Nole Awards, an awards ceremony where all Florida State athletes dress formally and are recognized for team and individual accomplishments. On each team the coaches pick a Golden Nole – someone who is a great athlete, person, service man or woman, and just an all-around good person. This year, deservedly, Kelly Hensley won for our team. She embodies intelligence, selflessness for her team, athleticism, and service for her community. Kelly was also amongst the top 6 athletes to complete the greatest amount of community service amongst all of the Florida State athletes. We are so excited for Kelly’s recognition. Once again I had a surreal moment realizing that I was attending my last Golden Nole. Seeing the people I’d spent my last four years with and seeing that we were all moving on with our lives hit me like a ton of bricks. I will miss dressing up with my team and being around such an amazing Seminole family.

This week is the last week of classes and we finish our regular season against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. While we have clinched the regular season title we are still planning on setting a tone across the ACC by going all out to win this last series.

Until next week, Go Noles!
