TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Committee of 30, a part of the Seminoles Boosters, will honor “Grads
Made Good,” Dr. Charlotte West (BS-PE ’54) and Ms. Janet Stoner (BS-PE ’70
and MS-Math ’72), at a Homecoming Brunch on Sunday, October 17, at the
University Center Club. All current women athletes and coaches, and
contributors to women’s athletics scholarships will be invited.

Dr. West, a softball player, has been Associate Athletics Director at
Southern Illinois University for many years. She was a “foremother” in the
establishment of intercollegiate athletics for women, having been a leader
in the CIAW, the AIAW, and now the NCAA. She has been a teacher, coach and

Ms. Stoner was a swimmer and a member of the Tarpon Club. She too was a
teacher before she entered the oil business where she is now Vice President
for Human Resources for Texaco. She jokes and says her colleagues think
the P. E. (Physical Education) in her degree is petroleum engineer.

The brunch is designed to expose women athletes to successful sportswomen
and to expand their horizons and goals, as well as thank those who have
made gifts to women’s athletics. It’s part of the outreach endeavors of
the Committee of 30. This committee was established to support the
celebration of 30 years of women’s intercollegiate athletics at Florida
State University (FSU). Through education and involvement, the Committee
intends to build a tradition of support and philanthropy for FSU women’s

A celebration was held in October 1998 to coincide with Volleyball season
(Volleyball was the first women’s intercollegiate sport at FSU). A Spring
Festival was held in April 1999 for the dedication of the Soccer/Softball
Complex. These celebrations were so successful that plans are being made
for another gathering of former women athletes and their supporters. This
event will be scheduled for mid-February 2000 to coincide with
games/matches of Basketball, Softball, Tennis and Golf.

Now that the 30-year mark has passed, the Committee of 30 still retains the
names and continues to serve as a liaison between the women athletes, the
Seminole Boosters, and the Athletic Department. Barbara Palmer is the
Chair of the Committee, and Dr. Fran Cannon serves as the co-Chair. There
are three sub-committees: Communications (Cassandra Jenkins, Chair),
Finance (Monica Lawfield, Chair), and Special Events (Dr. Billie Jones,
Chair). Michael Grantham is the scholarship fundraiser. Joel Padgett is
the primary liaison for Seminole Boosters, along with Debbie Derzypolski.
Kim Record is the primary liaison for the Athletic Department.

The Homecoming Brunch is one of a series of events hosted by the Committee
of 30. They have previously sponsored receptions for loyal supporters of
FSU women’s athletics in Miami and Tampa. Another reception is being
planned for Jacksonville in June 2000. The Committee of 30 meets quarterly
with the next meeting scheduled for November 5.

If you would like to
receive additional information about the Committee and their goals, please
