Bowerman Finishes First at Gasparilla

Tallahassee, Fla. The Florida State track and field program made an impact at one of the nation’s best distance races on Saturday. Freshman Laura Bowerman (Temple Terrace, Fla./King) was the top finisher among 5K female runners, completing the course in 16:54. Bowerman was among the top 25 overall 5K runners and the first women to cross the line.

Junior Kara Newell (Tallahassee, Fla./Boston University) recorded a time of 18:20 for third female and 64th overall. Sophomore Meredith Urban (Davie, Fla./Green Hope – N.C.) was fifth, 70th overall, in a time of 18:28. Freshman Amanda Hahn (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) completed the race seconds behind Urban in 18:37 while junior Jenny Gomez (Miami, Fla./Lourdes Academy) posted a time of 18:35. Junior Suzanne Shephard (Ellis, KS/Ellis) rounded out the top ten women with a time of 18:52 and tenth place.

Former FSU All-American Vicky Gill and current Seminole graduate assistant Keith Batten was a top finisher among the master’s races. Gill finished first in the 15K in 54:00 while Batten was seventh in 49:57.

Another group of Seminoles take the track in Gainesville, Fla., on Sunday, February 6, 2005 for the Gator Invitational.
