Carlson Leads Men’s Golf to Second

ATHENS, Ga. ( – Sophomore Florida State men’s golfer Corey Carlson shot a 5-under 139 (71-68) to help the Seminoles to a second-place finish at Monday’s two-round Southern Intercollegiate held at Athens Country Club.

The Seminoles continued their good ball-striking from this past weekend’s Seminole Intercollegiate, shooting 9-under (289-278) and only trailing tournament champion Lipscomb (-12). It is the second time FSU finished second in as many days after tying for the runner-up spot at the Seminole Intercollegiate.

Carlson was among the best in par 3 scoring, shooting 2-under on the shorter holes. His 11 birdies in 36 rounds played tied for the third-most in the field. The Green Cove Springs, Fla., native’s tied-for-third finish is the best of his career.

Florida State shot 22-under on par 5 holes, only supplanted by Oklahoma (-23). Collectively it shot 2-over on par 3s, aided tremendously by redshirt freshman Jonathan Keppler’s hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth hole that is 176 yards.

Redshirt junior Harry Ellis had another good showing, going 2-under (71-71) on Monday. He registered eight birdies on the day.

Sophomore Bennett Baker continues to improve, tying for 18th at even par (76-68). His 68 in the second round included an eagle on the par-5, 444-yard sixth hole.

Senior Josh Lee tied for 23rd at 1-over and freshman Jamie Li played individually and compiled another good round. The young talent shot 1-under in his two rounds, finishing with a 71 to end his day well.

Six teams in the Golfstat Top 50 competed in Monday’s event, including Lipscomb (43), FSU (30), Oklahoma (13, third), Arkansas (24, fourth), Kennesaw State (44, fifth) and Georgia (19, seventh).

FSU returns with the competitive Valspar Collegiate Invitational on March 19-21 at Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
