Florida State sophomore Gabriella Castaneda won the singles title at last week’s USTA National Clay Court Championship in Fort Lauderdale. In addition to her singles victory, Castaneda was the runner-up in mixed doubles.
In singles play, Castaneda beat three of the top five seeded players, including top-seed Steffi Carruthers in the semifinals. Carruthers is a professional with a career-high ranking of 662. She opened the tournament with a double-bagel win over No. 5 Gail Falkenberg and beat No. 3 Leyla Azaeva in the finals, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In mixed doubles, Castaneda partnered with Julio Ugarte en route to the finals. As the two-seed, the pair won three matches before falling in the finals to top-seeded Azaeva and Ty Trombetta.
Castaneda finished her second season with the Seminoles last month in the ACC Tournament. In 2016-17, she will be the top returning player for a Florida State team looking to make the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in 11 years.
