TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –With warmer weather than yesterday, freshman Matilda Castren stayed on a hot streak to hold onto her lead at the Florida State Match Up on Saturday. Castren tied her career best round score from yesterday with a 68 in the windy second round at the Southwood Golf Club. The No. 46 women’s golf team is in third place, only six spots out of first.

“The girls played a really good round of golf in tough conditions,” said head coach Amy Bond. “They battled hard and took what the golf course gave them. We’ve put ourselves in position to win tomorrow which was our main goal coming into the tournament. This is really one of our first opportunities as a young team to win a tournament and it makes it more special being at home.”

Castren started the morning with birdies on holes one, two and five into the wind. On the tenth hole, her second shot went into the fairway bunker but she bounced back and ended the hole with another birdie. With her seven birdies today and six yesterday, she leads the tournament with 13 birdies, five more than Furman’s Inga Gunnarsdottir who is second in birdies.

With six strokes separating Castren and second place players No. 2 Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson and Sarah Schmelzel of South Carolina, the freshman looks to hold onto the lead with her 8-under 136.

“Matilda played a phenomenal round of golf today,” continued Bond. “It was one of the best rounds I’ve seen in a long time. She kept her composure and hit some great shots. She has put herself in position to win her first tournament and tomorrow will be fun to watch.”

The team had a 10-over 298 today with Castren, Alex Milan, Carlton Kuhlo and Lydia Gumm contributing to the score. Adding the first round, the team has a 16-over 592 behind No. 13 Clemson’s 586 and No. 12 Clemson’s 589.

Milan, a junior, shot a 3-over 75 today after making an eagle on the 16th hole. With a long drive and a great second shot to the green, she drained her putt to get the extra strokes. Junior Carleton Kuhlo had a 5-over 77 today while Gumm, a freshman, carded a 6-over 78.

The tournament finished tomorrow as all players tee off at 8:30 for a shotgun start. The Seminoles start on holes one through four. Admission is free to watch the tournament.
