Former Florida State Heisman quarterback and current New York Knick point guard Charlie Ward has initiated a program in his hometown of Thomasville, Ga the past two years designed to encourage youth ages 8-12 to read. Ward rewards those who certifiably read 10 or more books a year a trip to go see him play in an NBA game. Last year, 60 youths, who achieved the reading mark, and their chaperones were treated to a Knicks – Hawks game in Atlanta at Ward’s expense. This year, the program allowed 85 well-read Thomas ville children to travel to Orlando the week before last. The trip, coordinated by Ward and FSU fan /Orlando banker Jimmy Hewitt, treated the youth to a Knicks – Magic game, a trip to the Orlando Science Center and lodging for the night.
