Consistency Helps No. 4 Beach Volleyball Stay Undefeated in Opening Weekend

DELAND, Fla.The No. 4 Florida State beach volleyball team completed its weekend sweep on Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon, taking down No. 12 Georgia State and No. 15 Stetson to go 4-0 at the Stetson Spring Fling.

The Seminoles saw a tough Georgia State lineup to start off the day, but was able to hold off the Panthers with a clinching win from Francesca Goncalves and Sara Putt at No. 3, and a fourth team point from Vanessa Freire and Brooke Kuhlman at No. 2. Freshman Madison Fitzpatrick was thrown into the mix at the No. 5 position, picking up her first win as a Seminoles with partner Molly McBain.

FSU was also faced with a stacked lineup from Stetson, as the first three positions were all decided in three sets. For the fourth time in as many matches, the No. 3 pairing of Goncalves/Putt clinched the match, while the No. 4 and 5 positions stayed undefeated over the course of the weekend.

Florida State returns to action next weekend as it hosts the Hampton Inn Capitol-University Invitational March 2-3. Admission is free to all regular season events at the FSU Sand Volleyball Courts.

The Seminoles picked up a quick win over the Panthers to start off day two of the Stetson Spring Fling. The redshirt senior duo of Horton/Luke earned the first team point for FSU, holding GSU’s McGinn/Elson to single digits in both sets.

The team of McBain/Fitzpatrick followed close behind with a two-set win at the No. 5 position, giving freshman Madison Fitzpatrick her first seeded win as a Seminole. While the Panthers came back to earn a point at No. 1, it was the duo of Goncalves/Putt that once again clinched the win for the Seminoles at the No. 3 position.

The pairing of Freire/Kuhlman closed out a pair of tight sets to finish things off for FSU at the No. 2 position for a 4-1 win over conference opponent Georgia State.

The Seminoles saw a stacked lineup at the top from Stetson, as each of the first three positions was decided in three sets.

Horton/Luke was the first duo to finish for the fourth time in the same number of matches this weekend, while McBain/Fitzpatrick followed with their second win of the day at No. 5.

From there the competition grew closer, as the Seminoles at each of the first three positions lost the first set and won the second. It was once again the Seminoles at No. 3 who were able to clinch the win and give FSU a 3-0 lead. The Hatters followed with a close win at No. 2, and Jerger/Paranagua at No. 1 was able to pick up a win to give the Seminoles a 4-1 victory.

  • Florida State’s record over Georgia State improves to 6-1.
  • Florida State’s record over Stetson improves to 9-0.
  • FSU’s all-time record improves to 130-27.
  • Head coach Brooke Niles’ record improves to 65-12.
    • This is the third season under Niles that the Seminoles have started off with at least a 4-0 record, in the same number of years with Niles at the helm.
  • Out of the six teams competing at the Stetson Spring Fling, FSU is the only team to come out undefeated.
  • Career Records
    • With her two wins over the weekend, senior Vanessa Freire’s 75-18 career dual match record is the third highest in program history.
    • Senior Tory Paranagua’s win against Stetson gives her the seventh-most overall wins in program history with an 87-21 record.
    • Brooke Kuhlman’s win against Georgia State moves her into a tie for 9th overall at the No. 2 position. She now has a 8-2 record at No. 2.
