Continued ITF Pro Circuit Success For Former `Noles

Nov. 11, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two weeks after winning a $10K Quintana Roo doubles event, Francesca Segarelli added another doubles victory, as well as a singles final appearance, at the $10K ITF Pro Circuit event in Lima, Peru from Nov. 5-8.

Segarelli showed off the versatility of her game, as the Lima event was played on a clay court as opposed to the hard court surface of the Quintana Roo event back in October. Segarelli and her partner Aldana Ciccarelli (ARG) defeated Farfan (ARG) and Miranda-Chang (PER) 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) to take the title. The pairing also needed to win a tie breaker to advance past the semifinals after winning all previous matches of the tournament in straight sets.

“I felt pretty good. I’ve worked really hard these days on getting better and getting more confident,” said Segarelli. “Every match I played, I gained more confidence which made me enjoy every match more and more.”

Segarelli also advanced to the singles final in Lima, before falling to Ana Sofia Sanchez (MEX) 3-6, 7-5, 4-6. It was her first singles final appearance of the season, having only reached the semifinals of another Quintana Roo event back in May.

“Playing for FSU taught me to believe in myself. And that most of the time you don’t feel great on court, but if you really work for it and really want to win, you will find a way,” added Segarelli. “It helped me during my singles quarterfinal match and all the way through doubles, so I am extremely grateful.”

Carolina De los Santos and her doubles partner Fernanda Brito (Chile) defeated the Argentinian pair of Gobbi Monllau and Vega 7-6(3), 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) to win the $10K Buenos Aires event from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2. The duo almost won back-to-back events as they narrowly fell 4-6, 4-6 to Luini (ARG) and Pella (ARG) in the finals of the most recent Buenos Aires event from Nov. 4-9.

The spring season for Florida State women’s tennis gets underway at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on January 19 at 9:30 a.m. with a dual match against Stetson, followed by a dual match against UAB at 3:30 p.m. For more on FSU women’s tennis, check us out on Facebook ( and Twitter (@FSU_WTennis).
