Cunningham Stays On The Bowerman Watch List After Strong Indoor Season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Following a stellar indoor campaign, FSU’s Trey Cunningham continues to hold a spot on the 2021 Bowerman Award Watch List, announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Cunningham is one of ten student-athletes named to the updated watch list and he is making his sixth appearance on the Bowerman Award Watch List.

The senior from Winfield, Ala. Placed third in the 60m hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships finishing with a time of 7.53. Cunningham finished just .02 from claiming gold.

Cunningham is coming off the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, where he earned his fourth Championship gold in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.67. His performance at ACC Indoors makes him the first ever athlete to win four straight titles in the 60-meter hurdles. He is also one of just four male athletes to win four indoor golds in ACC history.

Cunningham forever changed the Florida State record books with his time of 7.51 on February 14, 2020 setting a new school record. He also owns two of the top fastest times in NCAA History – No. 7 (7.51) and No. 8 (7.52).

“Trey has been outstanding the entire season,” said Head Coach Bob Braman. “He’s undefeated and is chasing his own best marks. He’s really deserving of being a Bowerman finalist.”

The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009 and is named after former Oregon coach Bill Bowerman, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track and field athletes in the nation.

The watch list represents the consensus among members of The Bowerman Watch List committees in regard to who is currently on their radar for consideration to win this year’s award. These student-athletes may or may not have competed yet this year, but based on past credentials have the attention of the committee.
