Get To Know Senior Fatma Yildirim

As the Florida State sand volleyball program prepares to begin its second season, will highlight the personalities of the players in a weekly Q & A feature – “Diggin’ in Deep.” Our eighth “Diggin in Deep” participant is senior Fatma Yildirim.

What’s your motto in life?
I like to dream big and fight for it. There’s a saying, `We it gets harder, you know you’re on the right track.’ I like to be challenged.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at…
I’m really good at being responsible and I can speak three languages (German, English and Turkish).

What is something most people don’t know about you?
I don’t drink Coke at all. When I was 10 my coach told me I wasn’t allowed to drink soda and I didn’t drink it until I was 15. Now I just drink Sprite every once in a while.

What is your favorite class at FSU?
Food lab. We get to cook a lot.

Do you have any phobias?
People who chew gum so loud. I can’t stand it or people who chew their food so loudly.

Who had the biggest influence on your athletic career?
My Turkish national team coach, Mehmet. I had this coach that I was with for five years. He inspired me a lot.

What do you think is your strongest athletic attribute?
I can jump really high and I think I’m really fast.

Best non-athletic talent?
I’m actually a good cook.

If your life was made into a movie what would it be titled and who would by your character?
It would be a comedy movie because I can never be serious and Zach Galifianakis would play me. I love him. I think he’s the funniest person ever.

What would you say will be the strength of the team this season?
This season we have a lot of good players. Our strength is everyone is a hard worker; they go for it and never quit.

What is the strangest talent you have?
I can add anything really fast. I’m great at math.

What was your childhood nickname or nickname that you currently have?
They call me `Fatty’ or `Fat.’

Name something, other than volleyball, that you’re truly passionate about…
I love watching tennis and curling.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
When I was 17 we played in the World Final against China and it was probably the best time I had in my life.

Favorite song to dance to?
“Die Young” by Kesha

Favorite dance?
I like to Salsa

What is one item that you really should throw away but probably never will?

I have so many things. I’m like a hoarder. I can’t really throw away things because they have memories attached to them, but probably old jewelry that I never wear and are falling apart.

Why did you choose FSU?
Because of our indoor volleyball assistant coach, Gokhan Yilmaz. He’s from Turkey and he was recruiting me and he talked to me and offered a scholarship.

What is your favorite thing about FSU?
I love everything about FSU.

The biggest difference of indoor and outdoor volleyball is sand of course, but can you tell me what are some other differences?
Instead of having five other people you only have one more person next to you and you have to be quicker, smarter and you have to be experienced to be really good at it.

What is the best way that you would describe your game style?
I like to hit and I like to dig. When I feel like I’m helping the person next to me that’s when I feel like I’m doing something good.

What do you think is one of the biggest misconceptions about sand volleyball?
I think most people think that people come to the games just to see the girls in bikini’s but I think there is a huge population of people that really enjoy it and enjoy watching sand volleyball just because it’s competitive not because of the girls.

What would be your perfect sand volleyball soundtrack?
“The Fighter” by Gym Class Heroes

Name three things you cannot live without…
My hair conditioner, my iPhone and food

How do you spend your free time?
I love to read. I probably read a book every two days and I love to memorize random facts.

What single piece of technology you cannot live without?
My iPhone

What is one daily activity that bores you?
Probably snoozing my alarm. It takes me 15 minutes to get up.

When do you feel your best morning, noon/afternoon or night?

What is your philosophy on life?
If you’re not dead yet there is always a way out.

Have you ever lived outside of this country?
Not lived there but I’ve been almost to every country in Europe.

Most exotic place that you have been?
I’ve been to Mexico twice.

Do you know any other languages?
German, English and Turkish

I love salmon with a huge salad and homemade raspberry dressing and baked potatoes.

Who would be your ideal dinner date?
My sister, I love hers she’s the one person I cannot live without.

Chocolate Mousse
