TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Rising senior Aziz Dougaz earned his first career professional singles title on Saturday with a win over Wake Forest’s and NCAA Individual Champion Petros Chrysochos.
With the win, Dougaz will be ranked in the top-500 in next week’s ATP rankings and will be one of the top-3 ranked college players in the world rankings.
Dougaz began the tournament with a win over world No. 1204 Duarte Vale (University of Florida) 6-1, 6-3. In the round of 16 Dougaz had a tougher battle but prevailed with a 7-5, 7-6(4) win over World No. 1093 Martin Joyce (Ohio State) to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Dougaz took world No. 720 Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna to a third set and came away with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win. He battled once again in a three-set match to take down world No. 1383 Alec Adamson to advance to the finals of the Champaign 25k Future against reigning NCAA Individual Champion, Petros Chrysochos.
In the finals, Dougaz took down the reigning NCAA Champions and world No. 529, Chrysochos, in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-4 to capture his first singles title. This win marked Dougaz’s second win over Chrysochos in the last two years (Apr. 14, 2017 No. 63 Dougaz def. No. 2 Chrysochos 4-6, 6-4, 6-4).
