Dougaz/Iradukunda Earn Tallahassee Futures Win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-  Florida State men’s tennis team commenced the main singles and doubles draws of the Tallahassee Futures Tournament presented by Visit Tallahassee at the Indoor Tennis Facility on Tuesday.

The stellar play of sophomore Aziz Dougaz and junior Guy Iradukunda saw them through as they defeated Germany’s Pirmin Haenle and Lukas Ollert 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 to advance to the round of 16 in the doubles main draw.

“I think we were ready to play, we prepared well for the match,” Dougaz said. “We’re happy that we won this match we hope we’re going to go further in the tournament- we’re confident in that.

“I think today was a good day (to prepare), it’s always good to play doubles before singles so you get in the tournament and you feel more comfortable in it.”

Former Florida State standouts Benjamin Lock and Anderson Reed met Winston Lin (USA) and Brayden Schnur (CAN) in the doubles draw but fell 6-2, 6-4. Redshirt junior Jose Gracia and junior Terrance Whitehurst also fell 6-2, 6-2.

Earlier in the afternoon, freshman Alex Knaff and redshirt junior Lucas Poullain fell to Robert Galloway and Nathaniel Lammons (USA) 6-3, 6-2.

In the singles draw, Lock lost his first set in a tiebreak 7-6(7) only to drop the second set 6-1 to Wil Spencer (USA). Gracia was able to capture the first set of his match against Ollert, but would eventually fall 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., Iradukunda will play defending NCAA singles champion Ryan Shane (USA) in the singles draw. Whitehurst will play Lin at 4:00 p.m.

At 6:00 p.m., associate head coach Ryler DeHeart, Dougaz, and Poullain will all compete in front of the evening crowd, giving the Seminoles a total of seven representatives in the singles draw.

“(Tomorrow) I just want to see us being competitive and having a good time playing the right way, and playing to win.” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.

There will be spectator seating on courts two and four for the main draws.

The finals will take place on December 10 (doubles) and December 11 (singles). All matches will be played at the Indoor Tennis Facility at 2566 Pottsdamer Rd., Tallahassee, Fla., 32310. The event is free to fans.
