Dougaz/Iradukunda Finish Runners-Up

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-  The Florida State men’s tennis team concluded their run in the Tallahassee Futures Tournament presented by Visit Tallahassee as junior Guy Iradukunda and sophomore Aziz Dougaz fell to Robert Galloway and Nathaniel Lammons 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 in a hard-fought doubles final match at the Indoor Tennis Facility on Saturday.

“Overall it’s been a great tournament for us,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “We’d liked to have won that match- we were so close, losing 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker. They played well and showed a lot of fight coming back winning the second set.

“All told, these guys won three doubles matches against really high-ranked players, (they) beat two of the four seeds in the tournament,” Hultquist said. “It think it’s a really strong performance for them heading into the season.”

Dougaz/Iradukunda defeated the No. 3 seed Tim Kopinski/Alex Lawson 0-6, 6-4, 10-2 on Friday in the semifinals and No. 1 seed Hans Hach Verdugo (MEX)/Kaichi Uchida (JPN) 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday in the quarterfinals after defeating Pirmin Haenle (GER)/Lukas Ollert (GER) 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 in the first round on Tuesday.

Earlier in the tournament, Iradukunda earned a significant win over Ryan Shane (USA) 7-6(3), 6-3 on Wednesday. Shane was the 2015 NCAA champion and a four-time All-American at Virginia, and last week won the $25k Waco Futures. He is ranked 611 in the ATP singles standings.

Redshirt junior Lucas Poullain also earned a strong singles win, defeating Lammons 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 earlier in the singles draw.

“It was a good tournament for us,” Hultquist said. “It was great. Most teams aren’t practicing this time of year so for us to play in an event where our guys are getting competitive matches helps because a month from now (the spring season) has started.”

The singles final, the final match of the Tallahassee Futures, will feature Jayden Schnur and JC Aragone at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

All matches are played at the Indoor Tennis Facility at 2566 Pottsdamer Rd., Tallahassee, Fla., 32310. The event is free to fans.
