The 15th-ranked Seminole softball team concluded play at the Seminole Challenge Tournament Saturday night on a high note by downing the Louisville Cardinals (0-3) 4-1 in their last game of the round-robin tournament. Sophomore Jessica van der Linden moved to 3-0 and Elisa Velasco and Brandi Stuart led the way offensively for FSU (4-3) by combing for a five-oF-seven night at the plate. Van der Linden struck out 10 batters and allowed no earned runs in lowering her team-leading ERA to 0.75 on the season.

For just the second time all weekend, Florida State struck first taking a one-run lead on the Cardinals in the second inning. Tatiana George and Monique Marier each reached on a fielder’s choice with George advancing safely on a Cardinal error. The error was a key as George went on to steal third and then score on an errant throw by Louisville catcher Lisa McMillan.

The Seminoles expanded their lead in the fourth when Marier led off by doubling to right center before Skyla Cox came into pinch-run. The sophomore immediately advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on an error by Cardinal shortstop Kenzie Meisenburg putting FSU up 2-0.

Florida State got some insurance in the seventh when van der Linden reached on an error and was followed by Stuart who had her second hit of the night when she singled a full-count pitch through the left side. Velasco then completed her perfect night at the plate (three-for-three) when she singled to right center to load the bases. Cardinal starter Jessica Rak (0-2) then walked the next two batters to put the Seminoles up 4-0.

Louisville put on a seventh-inning rally as van der Linden loaded the bases before closing out her third win of the season. The Cardinals lone run in the bottom of the seventh came on a Seminole error in the infield as was the only run the Cerritos, CA native would allow.

Florida State returns to action February 15 when they host Syracuse, Georgia, Penn State, Maryland and St. Johns at the Seminole Classic Tournament. The Seminoles open tournament play versus Syracuse and Georgia Friday, February 15 at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. respectively. All regular season games at FSU’s Seminole Softball Complex are free.
