Five Noles Ready for World University Games

World University Games 

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Five Florida State student-athletes representing four different countries will compete in the 29th World University Games in Taipei City, China from Aug. 19-30.

Men’s Swimming

Rising sophomores Vladimir Stefanik and Felipe Ribierio de Souza will compete in men’s swimming which will run from Aug. 20-27 at the National Taiwan Sport University Arena. Stefanik will represent Slovakia while Ribeiro will race for Brazil.

Stefanik will contest in three individual races including the 100m free (Aug. 23), 100m fly (Aug. 24) and the 50m free (Aug. 25), while Ribeiro is expected to compete in the 200m free on Monday in addition to the 4×100 free relay on Sunday and the 4×200 free relay on Friday.

The top 16 swimmers will advance to semifinals and the eight fastest times from semi’s will compete in finals the following day. For relays, the top eight times from prelims will contest in finals.

Both Stefanik and Ribeiro arrived in Tallahassee in January of 2017 and helped the Seminoles place fifth at the ACC Championships. Ribeiro finished 10th in the 200 free (1:35.47), while Stefanik contributed 20th place points in the 100 free (43.83) after taking 23rd (47.78) in the 100 fly.

Men’s Tennis

Redshirt junior Lucas Poullian will represent France in the men’s singles tennis tournament that runs from Aug. 21-29 at the Taipei Tennis Center.  He went a perfect 5-0 in the University Games tournament in France this summer in order to qualify.

Poullian was a third team All-ACC selection in 2017 as he led the Seminoles with 23 singles wins, including three over ranked opponents, in addition to an 18-10 double record.

Women’s Indoor Volleyball

Katie Horton will represent Team USA in Indoor Volleyball August 19-29 at the National Taiwan University Sports Center.

As a member of both the indoor and beach volleyball teams at Florida State, Horton has been a standout for the Seminoles on both stages. As a member of the indoor team, Horton was named First Team All-ACC in her senior season and Second Team All-ACC twice, and garnered two AVCA All-East Region Honors. In 2016 she became the first Florida State volleyball player to have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.

On the sand, Horton helped lead her team to a pair of CCSA Beach Volleyball Championships and two NCAA Tournament runs. She collected two CCSA Pair of the Week Honors in 2017 alongside partner Francesca Goncalves, and will continue to compete for the Seminoles in 2018 as a redshirt senior.

Horton and Team USA will open play in Pool C alongside Japan, Latvia and Thailand.

Women’s Athletics (Track & Field)

Redshirt sophomore Veronika Kanuchova will compete in the women’s hammer for Slovakia in the Athletics portion of the Games. Qualifying is scheduled for Aug. 24 and finals will take place on Aug. 26 at the Taipei Stadium.

A 2017 ACC Champion, Kanuchova is the FSU record holder in the event at 69.48 (227-11.5) and was a first-team All-American behind a fifth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
