DESTIN, Fla. –
Florida State maintained its team lead and Seminole sophomore Caroline Westrup moved into first place in the individual standings as second round play at the Chrysler Challenge on the Baytowne Course at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort came to a close. The Seminoles were the only team in the 10-team field to shoot a sub-300 score in maintaining their lead. They will begin play in the third round with a 20 stroke lead over second-place North Carolina.
The second round was delayed by weather and did not begin until 12 Noon CST
Florida State leads North Carolina by 20 strokes (601-621) and the College of Charleston by 27 strokes (601-628) heading into the third and final round. The Seminoles will look to hold the team lead and win their own tournament for the first time in seven tries since the event began as the ACC/SEC Challenge during the fall of 2000. Florida State’s best previous finish in the event came during the fall of 2002 when it finished in fourth place.
The Seminoles shot a 298 in the second round and have a two-round team total of 601. The second-best team round was turned in by the College of Charleston which finished with a 305 total. The Cougars moved up from a tie for fourth place after the first round into third place heading into Monday’s third and final round. North Carolina is in second place after carding a 307 in the second round; the Tar Heels have a 621 total for the first two rounds of the event.
Westrup, the nation’s second ranked women’s golfer according to GolfWeek Magazine, moved into first place as she carded a two-over par 73 in the second round. She has a two-round total of 147 and holds a two-stroke lead over Seminole teammate Lacey Agnew and Dori Carter of Ole Miss. Westrup is looking to become the first Seminole player to earn the individual champion in the history of the event.
Monday’s third and final round – a shotgun start – is scheduled for an 8:00 CST start.
