Florida State Baseball Hosts The Citadel in Top 20 Matchup

#11 FLORIDA STATE (23-6, 8-1 ACC)

Florida State, ranked No. 11 in all three polls this week, has won 20 of its last 21 games. The Seminoles swept North Carolina over the weekend to take the lead in the ACC standings, improving to 8-1 in conference play. Karl Jernigan was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday after going 9-for-14 (.643) with seven RBI over the last five games. Jernigan, who has upped his average by more than 100 points over the last three weeks to .318, leads the league with 16 stolen bases. All-American John-Ford Griffin leads the ACC with a .490 batting average and is tied for second in the league with nine home runs. Blair Varnes (4-1) is tops among conference pitchers with an ERA of 2.08. FSU leads the ACC in team ERA with a mark of 2.95. The Seminoles lost four-year starter at shortstop Brett Groves to a torn ACL in Saturday’s game against UNC. Jeff Probst started at short on Saturday and will get the call again at shortstop against The Citadel.

#18 THE CITADEL (20-6, 8-1 SoCon)

The Citadel, ranked No. 18 in Collegiate Baseball, is coming off a tough 10-9 loss to East Tennessee State on March 18th after winning 14 straight. All-American Phillip Hartig leads the team with in hitting (.443), home runs (6), and RBI (34). The Citadel rotation: Tuesday – Eric Talbert LHP (5-0, 1.44 ERA) & Wednesday – Dallas McPherson LHP (3-2, 5.35 ERA).


Florida State has won all five meetings against The Citadel. The Seminoles took two games from the Bulldogs during the 1998 and 1999 regular seasons and won the last meeting in the 1999 NCAA Regional, 24-6.
