Florida State Baseball Opens ACC Play With Virginia

March 8, 2001

#18 FLORIDA STATE (11-5)

Florida State, ranked No. 18 in Collegiate Baseball this week, has won eight consecutive games. The Seminoles are in the middle of an 11-game home stand and will open ACC play this weekend against Virginia after a pair of mid-week wins against St. Joseph’s. FSU recorded its first shutout of the season in Wednesday’s 6-0 victory. Karl Jernigan broke Jose Zabala’s all-time FSU hit by pitch record with the 47th of his four-year career in that game. John-Ford Griffin (LF) is riding a 12-game hitting streak and he continues to lead the team with a .491 batting average and an RBI total of 25. The junior has homered in four of the last five games.

Virginia is 7-4 after splitting with Seton Hall last weekend. The Cavaliers will start LHP Brendon Creswell (2-1, 3.43 ERA) on Friday, LHP Joseph Koshansky (2-0, 1.23 ERA) on Saturday and RHP Dan Street (1-0, 1.84 ERA) on Sunday. LF David Stone (.395, 10 RBI) and 3B Jon Benick (.327, 3 HR, 14 RBI) lead the Cavs offensively.

Florida State leads the all-time series 26-7, which dates back to 1972. FSU won two out of three last year at Virginia and has won 10 of the last 11 games, including a three-game sweep in Tallahassee in 1999.

Sunday’s game will be televised by Sunshine with Gene Deckerhoff (play-by-play) and former Seminole Link Jarrett (color) handling the commentary. All three games will be carried live on SportsRadio 1270 (WNLS-AM). Lee Bowen and Jim Crosby begin coverage 15 minutes prior to game time. Internet broadcasts are available at and
