The No. 18 Florida State Seminoles (15-5) won their 12th straight game by a score of 4-3 over Northern Iowa (7-7) Tuesday night at Dick Howser Stadium. Eric Roman relieved starter Trent Peterson and pitched four no-hit innings to earn his first victory of the season. Justin Lord pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
Northern Iowa got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the second inning. After a pair of two-out walks, Adam Boeve picked up an RBI with a single to center.
A costly error allowed NIU to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth. After three singles loaded the bases to start the inning, Peterson struck out the next two batters. Travis Welsch then grounded to short and two unearned runs scored when Groves couldn’t come up with the grounder to end the inning.
FSU took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth on what would prove to be the game-winning run. Karl Jernigan singled, stole second and scored on Groves’ single up the middle.
Griffin and Zech led the Seminoles with three hits apiece.
Victor Saldana took the loss for NIU, giving up four earned runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work. Peterson allowed just one earned run on six hits in the no-decision for FSU.
The Seminoles wrap up their 12-game home stand Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. against Liberty. FSU left-hander Matt Lynch (1-1) is scheduled to face Liberty right-hander Danny Valentin (3-0).
