Florida State Faces Virginia Tech and Virginia Friday And Saturday

The Florida State volleyball squad (4-11, 2-5 ACC) hosts Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia Friday and Saturday on Lucy McDaniel Court at Tully Gym. First serve for both matches is at 7pm.

The Seminoles, who have dropped three straight home matches, are led by senior Kristen Rust who averages 3.21 kills and 2.90 digs per game.  Senior Andreza Santos paces the offense with a team-best .281 hitting percentage and 3.09 kills per outing.  Court general Jessica Skower averages 10.67 assists per game and freshman Gabrielle Rivera leads the team with 48 total blocks on the season and a respectable 1.00 block per game average.  Sophomore Summer Weissing guides the offense with 4.12 digs per contest.


Florida State is hitting .179 while its opponent average a higher .211 mark. 


Scouting Virginia Tech (9-7, 4-3 ACC):

Virginia Tech enters the match with a 9-7 overall record and a 4-3 ACC mark…The Seminoles split with the Hokies during the 2004 campaign…Although Tech began last week with a 3-0 loss to Virginia, the Hokies rebounded to defeat Wake Forest 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 7, and then won a thrilling five-game set with Duke on Sunday, Oct. 9 to finish the week 2-1…Freshman Sarah Munoz led the team with 4.36 kills per game last week…Junior Katie Esbrook had a team-high .415 hitting percentage and 13 blocks (1.18 per game) last week…Senior Melissa Markowski  led Tech with 12.45 assists per game…Sophomore Amanda Cloyd averaged 4.82 digs per game for the Hokies. 


Scouting the University of Virginia (10-5, 4-3 ACC):

Virginia enters the weekend with a 10-6 overall and 5-2 conference record…Virginia sophomore outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood was named the ACC “Player of the Week” on Monday…She posted 62 kills (5.64 kills per game) while hitting an impressive .410 in helping lead the Cavaliers to three ACC victories last week…The Seminoles split with UVa last season…The last time the Cavs played on Lucy McDaniel Court was on Nov. 5 of last season when FSU walked away with a five game thriller on Senior Night.  


A Look Back: Miami 3, FSU 1

The University of Miami Hurricanes handed Florida State its third straight home loss of the season with a 3-1 win over the Seminoles on Lucy McDaniel Court at Tully Gym Tuesday night.  Game scores were 36-34, 21-30, 26-30, and 29-31.  Once again, the Seminoles could not click offensively, as Florida State recorded a low hitting percentage of .181.  The Tribe had only 61 kills with 30 errors on 171 attacks.  The `Canes recorded 15 more kills and hit a respectable .238 percent. While the Seminoles could not find a rhythm offensively, the defense produced a good showing, out-blocking Miami 15.5 – 11.0.  Seniors Lauren Scott, Kristen Rust and Andreza Santos were the only Seminoles in double digit kills with 14, 10, and 10, respectively.  Freshman Gabrielle Rivera had eight kills and sophomore Makini Thompson registered seven.  Rivera, who hit a team-best .467 percent tonight, also tallied seven block assists and Scott recorded seven total blocks.  Scott ended the night with a team-high 18.0 points.
