Freshman Jimmy Baxter scored 12 points off the bench to lead South Florida to a 69-54 win over Florida State on Thursday night at the Leon County Civic Center.
South Florida’s harassing zone defense held the Seminoles (1-6) to 27 percent shooting and helped lead the Bulls to a 41-21 halftime lead.
The Bulls (3-3) defense held guard Michael Joiner, Florida State’s leading scorer, to one point. He came into the game averaging 11 points.
Cedric Smith and Sam Sanders each added 10 points for South Florida, which won in Tallahassee for the first time since 1985.
Delvon Arrington and Andrew Wilson were the only Seminoles in double figures with 11 points each.
The loss was Florida State’s third straight at home. The Seminoles’ 0-4 home start is their worst since 1957.
