Florida State Finishes Strong In Spring Season

April 30, 2009

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team finished up the spring season on April 18 with strong performances at an indoor and sand volleyball tournament.  The Seminoles get a break from the court this summer before workouts begin in preparation for the fall season which starts on August 28.

“The last two weekends of spring were very productive for our team,” Seminole head coach Chris Poole said.  “We were able to line-up against tough competition in Gainesville and played very competitively.  We did not have our All-ACC player, Lauren Richardson, on the court and still competed well against three teams that were ranked ahead of us last fall in the final NCAA RPI.”

At the Florida Tournament on April 11, Florida State defeated ACC foe Miami in two matches, but fell to the host and in-state rival Gators twice.  The Noles were 1-1 against Florida International which they will face-off with this fall at the FIU Tournament on September 12-13.

The Seminoles split up for the weekend of April 18 at the Florida Southern College Tournament and the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships – Fiesta at Siesta Key.  Florida State dominated the Florida Southern event, going 4-for-4 with three sweeps.  On the sand, the three FSU teams of Mira Djuric and Courtney Zuber, Taylor Wilson and Rachael Morgan and Stephanie Neville and Nikki Baker each made it to the first round of the playoffs, but were defeated in the one-set elimination.

“We had 14 players total last fall and most of them played each weekend,” Poole said.  “That meant using a lot of different line-ups and seeing how everyone would respond under adversity.

“I’m pleased with the progress this year.  We have made great strides as a team, but more importantly many of the individuals have made incredible improvement.  This summer will be huge for these girls.  We are hoping that they are ready to take this program to the next level in the fall.”

The 2009 season kicks off inside Tully Gymnasium Friday, August 28, as the Seminoles host the Florida State Invitational with Central Michigan, North Dakota State and Florida A&M.  Keep up with the Garnet and Gold by visiting www.seminoles.com.
